Tree fungus could provide green transport fuel
Organism discovered in the Patagonian rainforest produces mixture of chemicals similar to diesel

A tree fungus could provide green fuel that can be pumped directly into tanks, scientists say. The organism, found in the Patagonian rainforest, naturally produces a mixture of chemicals that is remarkably similar to diesel.
"This is the only organism that has ever been shown to produce such an important combination of fuel substances," said Gary Strobel, a plant scientist from Montana State University who led the work. "We were totally surprised to learn that it was making a plethora of hydrocarbons."
Monday, November 03, 2008 Amazon launches Frustration Free Packaging:
Amazon's Green Scene Blog.
I think this is pretty cool. I hate most of the unnecessary packaging that comes with most products. Amazon is starting a new program where you can buy the product without all the wasteful packaging. Very limited now, but in the future for products which I know that I want, I would be happy to support Amazon if I could get the same product with less waste! posted by John | 11:10 AM
Continuing on the theme... here is the cover from this week's Austin Chronicle. I need to find one of my favorite GWB pictures from an old LA Weekly cover...

The Thinking Machine 4: Chess
From their site:
"What do the images mean?
When it is your (White's) turn to move, the chess board will gently pulse to show the influence of the various pieces. in the left image below, you can see waves over the squares around the king and (very lightly) over the squares where the pawns might capture. When the machine (Black) is thinking, a network of curves is overlaid on the board; see image at right. The curves show potential moves--often several turns in the future--considered by the computer. Orange curves are moves by black; green curves are ones by white. The brighter curves are thought by the program to be better for white. " posted by John | 11:02 AM

It's exactly 7 days till the start of the MR340. (www.rivermiles.com) Now is the time when all the training is over with and just have to avoid hurting yourself doing something dumb. Last year I did the Colorado River 100 in my Kruger Sea Wind canoe. After training for several months and feeling pretty good, the day before the race I was cutting some cord with a pair of scissors and cut pretty deep into the pad on my left index finger. I can't remember in my life ever cutting myself with scissors, but of course that day I did. It hurt like heck through the entire race...
Phil and I have been training since February for this race, so I'll be very careful around sharp objects till I cross the finish line.
During the race there should be online coverage on the MR340 website, including a leaderboard. When they post the link to that, I'll try and put it up here too. posted by John | 9:39 AM
